The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announced seven people were killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, January 20, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, January 22, at midnight. Year to date, 47 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 30 vehicular deaths in this same time period in 2011. A large percentage of these accident occurred on secondary roads, which follows the report last year of South Carolina's deadly rural roads. Many families are surprised to learn of increase in car related fatalities, considering the improved safety features in cars today. The families suffering the loss of a loved one may turn to Families of Highway Fatalities' for support. This organization is made of family members who have lost a family member in a fatal motor vehicle crash, clergy, counselors and friends of fatality victims. They meet regularly in informal groups and offer Hope and Healing Grief Workshops.
