Failure to Use Leg Compression Devices After GI Surgery in High-Risk Patient

A middle-aged man who underwent a gastrointestinal surgery in to repair a problem between his esophagus and stomach, was at high risk for blood clots known as deep vein thromboses (DVT). He was given leg pumps known sequential compression devices (SCDs) during surgery to prevent DVT. The surgeon also ordered the SCDs to be applied to the man’s legs after surgery but they were removed by a hospital nurse and not timely reapplied. It was alleged that the failure to apply the SCDs after surgery, together not giving adequate blood thinners, led to the patient’s subsequent DVT and PE, resulting in his death. Mark Clore prosecuted the case to a successful, confidential settlement for the man's family.
