Top Ten Most Deadly Vehicles in a Car Accident Revealed

Despite the rough year we've had with vehicles being recalled for defective parts, a new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) shows that the number of fatal car accidents is actually declining. Over the past three years, the odds of dying in a late-model vehicle has reduced by one-third. IIHS believes this is due to improvements in overall vehicle design, which keep occupants safer in the event of a collision. According to their most recent data, 7,700 lives were saved in 2012 that would have been lost if vehicle design had not changed at all since 1985. The Study IIHS compared the death rates from collisions in late-model vehicles to determine which ones were the safest choices. For the most part, smaller vehicles have higher fatality rates than their larger counterparts. However, there are a few exceptions to the rule, which is why the IIHS publishes a list of the most deadly, as well as the safest picks, to help drivers make better choices when purchasing a vehicle. For the purpose of this particular study, the vehicles included were 2011 models, but they also incorporated earlier models if no structural changes had been made. Ten Vehicles that are Most Likely to Kill You The ten most deadly vehicles are listed below, along with the corresponding number of deaths per million registered vehicle years.

  1. Kia Rio 4-door (149 deaths)
  2. Nissan Versa 4-door (130 deaths)
  3. Hyundai Accent 4-door (120 deaths)
  4. Chevrolet Aveo4-door (99 deaths)
  5. Hyundai Accent 2-door (86 deaths)
  6. Chevrolet Camaro coupe (80 deaths)
  7. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew 4WD (79 deaths)
  8. Honda Civic2-door (76 deaths)
  9. Nissan Versa hatchback 4-door (71 deaths)
  10. Ford Focus (70 deaths)

Nine Vehicles that are Most Likely to Save Your Life There were actually nine vehicles in the study that had no reported fatalities whatsoever. Interestingly, two-thirds of the zero-fatality list are SUVs.

  1. Audi A4 4WD
  2. Honda Odyssey
  3. Kia Sorento 2WD
  4. Lexus RX 350 4WD
  5. Mercedes-Benz GL-Class 4WD
  6. Subaru Legacy 4WD
  7. Toyota Highlander hybrid 4WD
  8. Toyota Sequoia 4WD
  9. Volvo XC90 4WD

If you're in a car accident in Charleston, any of the nine with no reported fatalities is your best bet. However. IIHS also noted that the Honda Pilot 4WD, Mercedes-Benz M-Class 4WD, Ford Crown Victoria 4-door car, and the GMC Yukon 4WD are fairly safe as well. Each had four or fewer deaths per million registered vehicle years.
