More E. coli Cases in North Carolina

State and local health officials are investigating seven E. coli cases in Wake County that sent four people to the hospital and sickened at least three others. Wake County Community Health Director Sue Lynn Ledford says officials learned of the test results confirming E. coli on Tuesday. Six children and one adult were sickened. Of the four who were hospitalized, two have been released but two others remain in intensive care. Ledford says children are generally more susceptible to the ailment than adults. E. coli is a potentially deadly type of food poisoning caused by bacteria found in fecal matter. Symptoms include severe diarrhea and painful abdominal cramps. Officials aren't sure yet whether any of the cases are connected. Ledford says they should have more answers within a few days. [article from WLOS ABC 13]
