Mt. Pleasant Police Officer Charged with DUI

A Mount Pleasant Police major was charged with DUI after crashing his Jeep. He was subsequently released on a $997 personal recognizance bond. This type of bond differs from bail or a security bond in that it is a personal promise by the defendant to appear for future court dates. Fortunately, this was a single car accident and no one was injured. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, 116 people have been killed on South Carolina highways through March 2012. Last year there were 123 traffic related deaths in this same time period. When a drunk driver kills a member of your family, he/she can be found liable in accordance with South Carolina wrongful death laws. Call the Clore Law Group if a drunk driver killed someone you love.

Mt. Pleasant Leads State in DUI Arrests

This arrest brings light to a dubious distinction held by Mount Pleasant. It has more DUI arrests than any other municipality in South Carolina. In 2010, 437 people were arrested for drunk driving. That was a 12% increase over the previous year! Mount Pleasant recorded 2,796 DUI arrests from 1998 to 2008; more than any other place in the state. As with any car accident, fault must be assigned in order to hold the negligent party accountable. Intoxication is certainly an indicator of fault, but a civil lawsuit's outcome is not dependent on a criminal conviction. A drunk driver's arrest can be "thrown out" due to a procedural mistake by the arresting officer. When this happens, a victorious civil lawsuit may prove to be the only punishment the negligent party receives for his or her reckless behavior.
