LASIK Surgery

The Post and Courier recent wrote of a LASIK Surgery doctor in Charleston. LASIK stands for laser in situ keratomileusis, which means using a laser underneath a corneal flap (in situ) to reshape the cornea (keratomileusis). This procedure uses a laser designed to treat refractive errors, improve vision, and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. This laser procedure alters the shape of the cornea, which is the transparent front covering of the eye. Though the excimer laser had been used for many years before, the development of LASIK is generally credited to Ioannis Pallikaris from Greece around 1991. LASIK Surgery is intended to repair refractive errors. Types of Refractive Error Myopia (nearsightedness)- In people with myopia, the mismatch in focusing power and eye length causes distant objects to be blurry and near objects to be clearer. Hyperopia (farsightedness)- In people with hyperopia, the mismatch in focusing power and eye length causes near objects to be blurry and distant objects to be relatively clearer. Astigmatism- In people with astigmatism, either the corneal or lens shape is distorted, causing multiple images on the retina. This causes objects at all distances to appear blurry. Many people have a combination of either myopia or hyperopia with astigmatism.

LASIK Surgery Errors

In most cases, LASIK Surgery works fine and the patient's eyesight is improved; however, negligent actions have resulted in these injuries.
  • Blurry vision
  • Warping or scarring of the cornea
  • Dry or painful eyes
  • Halo or starburst effects that interfere with clear vision or safe driving
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Loss of visual acuity, even with the best possible correction with eyeglasses

LASIK Surgery FAQs

How much money can I expect from a settlement or jury award? Experienced and ethic attorneys will never predict results. Each settlement or jury verdict is based on the circumstances of your medical injuries. How will I know if the surgeon made a mistake? In most cases, you won't. Surgery centers go out of their way to inform you of the health risks, often in an effort to make you think the surgeon couldn't have been negligent. Like all other medical treatment and surgical procedures, there is an expected level of care. Experienced medical malpractice lawyers work with experts in the field to investigate your injury and determine whether the surgical standards and expectations were fully met. Life-care specialists help determine not only the amount of money you will need for medical treatment, but also your loss of earning potential, social costs, and the full value of your quality of life.
