FDA is recommending doctors no longer prescribe Avastin for women with breast cancer and determining that the data indicate that the drug does not prolong overall survival in breast cancer patients or provide a sufficient benefit in slowing disease progression to outweigh the significant risk to patients. Studies have not show the drug helped patient live longer, but do show they experienced a significant increase in serious side effects. These risks include severe high blood pressure; bleeding and hemorrhage; the development of perforations (or ''holes'') in the body, including in the nose, stomach, and intestines; and heart attack or heart failure. Avastin for Breast Cancer

The FDA is revoking the the accelerated approval of the breast cancer application of Avastin (bevacizumab), manufactured by Genentech. It has not been shown to provide a benefit, in terms of delay in the growth of tumors in metastatic breast cancer, that justifies its serious and life-threatening risks. Avastin will still remain on the market as an approved treatment for certain types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme). The FDA approved Avastin for treating metastatic breast cancer in 2008. The accelerated approval program provides earlier patient access to promising new drugs to treat serious or life-threatening conditions while confirmatory clinical trials are conducted.
